Mazda used last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show to debut the new 2010 Mazda3 Sedan, and then followed it with the reveal of the Hatchback model at the Bologna Motor Show just one month later. There is still one more variant of the Mazda3 in the works and latest reports indicate the car will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The car is the sporty Mazdaspeed (MPS) model and it was captured recently testing in prototype form. Details about the upcoming hot-hatch have since been leaked by Mazda representatives at the first drive of the new Mazda3 Hatchback in Spain this week. Speaking with AutoTelegraaf, the representatives revealed that there will be two different versions of the car.

Lotus is laboring on an electric sports car to compete with Tesla’s Roadster and Fisker’s Karma. The CEO of Lotus, Michael Kimberley, said the company is already “working on the technologies that will go behind” the electric Lotus, and that buyers should not be “surprised to see an electric Lotus shortly”.The news emerges after the latest revealing of the Lotus Evora 4-seater, for which there is already a long list of celebrities expressing interest.

Tiguan. Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue very well, unless I’m missing something in the German to English translation. Anyone know what a Tiguan really is besides it being V-dub’s new sport compact crossover SUV?

In reality, Tiguan is another one of those names concocted by the marketing department. A melding of the German words Tiger (“tiger”) and Leguan (“iguana”). Someone please tell me how Volkswagen’s new cute-ute has the combined the attributes of a fierce jungle cat and a lazy decorative reptile.

Cons:

Square shape is great for making more inside storage, but bad for aerodynamics
Gas mileage is not stellar (made worse with the square-er shape)
Voice recognition (I am starting to hate these) system
3rd row seats are only usable by children or very short people (at 5′6″, I wouldn’t be comfortable for any length of time sitting back there)

Fuel Economy:
Advertised: 16 in the city, and 22 highway (or 18 combined for the AWD Touring Edition).
Actual: 18.7 with my un-aggressive driving style. Sightly better than the combined estimate, but still worse than other 7-8 passenger SUVs on the market.

Introduction:
Wow, the Pilot is ginormous! Okay, I know that’s not really a word, but holy cow! There is a whole lotta vehicle with the re-designed Pilot. It seems that for 2009, the Honda Element got more rounded shapes, while the Pilot got the more square shape - they completely traded places! The new Pilot appears to be significantly larger than it’s older counterparts, and the frontal view is now markedly bolder-looking with its unique grill (bad to the bone). The day-time running lights prevent having to figure out how to turn on the headlights as daylight begins to disappear. I think this really adds to the safety factor, even in broad daylight.

Driving Impressions:
The Pilot accelerated really well. I didn’t try to blast through any corners, as I was having some issues with the aerodynamics of the car. It felt a bit top-heavy, and definitely took a bit of road to get it stopped. Other than that, it was pretty fun to drive. I had a bit of trouble parking, as it’s pretty large! Add to that, one of the other reviewers had put their trailer-hitch mounted bike-rack on the back, so not only was I fighting a larger vehicle than I’m used to, but I had about 3 extra feet behind me to deal with! I reverted to a 16-year old, trying to parallel park for the first time. But it was one of those things that you could get used to, if you spent more than 3 days in a car. Due to the size of the car, I could easily see well up the road. The Pilot weighs a good deal, so that, coupled with being able to see so far ahead (well, and Honda’s safety reputation), I felt pretty darned safe. A definite bonus in my book.

Fiat is cooking up a opponent for the Nano. I mean what’s with all these car makers? Where were they all these years? When Tata initiated the ‘world’s cheapest automobile’ idea, people looked at them with disgust. They spoke shit terribly about them and went to the degree of insulting them and conveying their intent that it was impracticable to manufacture something for $2,500.

But soon after the Tata Nano went live in New Delhi earlier this year, Ford, Hyundai, GM, Mitsubishi, Renault and a bundle of other electric car makers joined the bandwagon of the sub-$3,000 car. OK. It’s thoroughly understandable if a market has changed drastically, and it demands a product carrying a low price tag, but it hasn’t. Only raw material prices have elevated all these years, which Ratan Tata expressed at the Nano’ launch.

What Tata has done is set the benchmark and proved to the world that by means of frugal engineering, it’s really possible to manufacture a $2,500 car.

And now look whose the new applicant with such an intention- Fiat. By 2010, the Italian auto maker, claims that the world’s cheapest car will wear its badge. And we know why the Ferrari-owner could have said so.

Interestingly, earlier this year, Tata frankly declared that it was ready for talks with Fiat for selling the Nano overseas with the Fiat badge. The talks have in all probability not worked and maybe the Italian manufacturer was frightened that its brand image and reputation would go for a toss if it sold such a product abroad. Smart !

So, how does one avoid such a deal smoothly? Easy- Make a competitor

No other details have emerged with regard to this car. It should in all possibility be a 4-seater with 4 doors. If Fiat’s thinking of manufacturing a vehicle for the masses, and we all know that the company looks to adopt a different approach every time, we reckon they should take a look at the Carver- A 2 seater with 3 wheels and totally fun to drive. Perhaps a 4-seater should not be all that difficult to make.

The Nano, Hyundai or GM’s $3,000 car and the rest may have loads of space, comfort, fuel-efficiency et cetera. However, we’re not confident whether they will be fun to drive. All of us look forward to to having some amount of fun when driving, don’t we? So why shouldn’t less-fortunate people experience it too?

Fun- Precisely what someone is searching for when sitting behind the wheel, expect for if you are a truck driver or a bus driver where the situation is entirely different. We would unquestionablly find something like a 4-seater Carver more fun to drive in comparison to a Nano and after the methodology which Fiat adopted when making the 500, I’d say a tilting 3-wheeler is equally crazy, adorable and doable.C’mon Fiat. Here’s your big chance.

Nissan has announced that it will increase the price of the 2009 Nissan GT-R. Nissan said the price increase is due to the increase cost of raw materials. Pricing for the Nissan GT-R now starts at $76,840 for the base model and $79,090 for the GT-R Premium model. Prior to Sept. 5th the Nissan GT-R started at $69,850.

The Nissan GT-R’s iPod option saw a price increase to $400 from $360.

To date Nissan has sold 70 percent of its first year allocation for the U.S. of the 480-hp car. Deliveries begin on July 7, 2008.
Nissan today announced an interim price adjustment on the 2009 Nissan GT-R due to increased raw materials costs. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP)* of $76,840 for the GT-R and $79,090 for the GT-R Premium model are effective immediately. Destination & Handling (D&H) is $1,000. The adjusted prices do not apply to customer orders already in dealer hands prior to September 5. The initial GT-R pricing was established nearly a year ago.

To date, approximately 70 percent of the first year allocation of GT-Rs for the United States market have been sold as part of a pre-sale program that has been underway since February 2008. The first customer deliveries of the limited production Nissan GT-R supercar began on July 7, 2008. The GT-R is available only through officially certified Nissan dealers that have met a number of strict sales, service and facilities commitments, including dedicating a master technician to GT-R service. A searchable listing of the 663 GT-R Certified Nissan dealers is available to consumers on nissanusa.com.

German luxury car maker Audi earlier today announced pricing for its 2009 A4 and A4 Avant equipped with the new 2.0-liter direct-injected and turbocharged four cylinder. The MSRP for the front-wheel drive sedan will be $32,700, while the all-wheel drive station wagon will cost $34,500.

Customer cars will start arriving at dealerships in September of 2008, with some Audi dealers getting demonstration examples for customers to test drive by the week of August 10.

The all-new models will feature more standard features, and when equipped with the 2.0TFSI and Quattro all-wheel drive system, will return better fuel economy than competitors, said Johan de Nysschen, Audi of America’s executive vice president.

While an optional 3.2-litter V6 engine with direct injection will be available in the sedan only, Audi has not revealed the pricing of that model. It will be significantly higher than the FWD 2.0TFSI price of entry however, as it is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system exclusively.

The Avant (wagon) will only be available with the turbo four-cylinder and Quattro all-wheel drive.

The 2.0TFSI engine is rated at 211 horsepower and 258lb-ft of torque, and EPA fuel economy of 21mpg in the city and 27mpg on the highway when installed in the manual-transmission, front-wheel drive A4 sedan

Porsche’s new glass-roofed 911 Targa is on its way to Australian shores later this year, and is set to feature the latest in Porsche technology.

The 911 Targa’s 1.54-square-metre glass roof is composed of two segments, with a sliding roof at the front and a glass panel at the rear. Opening within seven seconds, the roof offers an open space of over 400mm.

Powered by a 254kW 3.6 litre flat-six engine, the 911 Targa 4, along with the 283kW 3.8 litre 911 Targa 4S, will come bearing a choice of either Porsche’s PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplung, or a double-clutch gearbox, replacing the optional Tiptronic S automatic box.

Both models will feature Porsche’s electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management system, which steps in for the previous viscous all-wheel-drive system.

As with the other 911 models, the Targa 4 and Targa 4S are armed with direct fuel injection, which Porsche claims offers an increase in engine power of up to 8.5 percent, reduced fuel consumption by 11.2 percent, and a decrease in CO2 emissions of 13.6 percent.

As a result, The 911 Targa 4 rockets to 100km/h in 5.0 seconds, while the 911 Targa 4S splits the hair at 4.7 seconds.

The 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S are expected to land in Aussie showrooms on October 25—along with the Carrera 4 and 4S models—and pricing will be announced soon.
